While I'm no blackblaze, I've had hard drives with SMART since it's inception and it's predicted failures and saved my butt a few times.That being said I'm gonna hijack your thread slightly in case anyone knows of a way to do a full DESTRUCTIVE test as well, similar to the unraid utility (forgot the name) that writes all zeros and then reads all sectors to verify it's getting all zeros. One thing I noticed is that there are Pending sectors - and unless they can be cleared then the drive is unsuitable for use with unRAID. I am not sure if pending sectors can make the short SMART test fail. I would suggest running a pre_clear cycle against the drive to see if the pending sectors get cleared. Run a daily SMART short test on critical drives like in home server's RAID array or NAS devices if they support it. If the drive(s) is especially critical run a weekly long test in off hours to identify a failing drive as soon as possible before the data is unreadable.
